Urban Quarter

Urban framework plan
The mixed-use quarter takes the form of a perimeter block. According to ATP’s Head of Design, the urban planner Florian Beck, this will bring urban planning benefits to the historic town and help to make the downtown area more attractive. ATP designed a building ensemble consisting of a three-story hotel with a food shop and a residential building with a ground-floor drugstore and restaurant.

Creating connections
The new, richly planted route between the buildings creates an axis from the pedestrian zone of the old town to the promenade on the River Brigach. The opening of the hotel and the restaurant towards the river and the newly created bankside terraces strengthen the recreational qualities of the site and invite passersby to rest awhile.

Ecological aspirations
The quarter’s extensive green spaces, which are planted with trees, and large areas of green roof establish a natural context and increase the biodiversity of the location. These green areas are irrigated by a rainwater retention system with semi-automatic watering equipment. The air-conditioning plant is also equipped with high-quality heat recovery equipment and designed in line with current ecological design guidelines.
